Be systematic

A systematic approach is needed to cope with the ever-increasing use of medical equipment in hospitals. Any maintenance programme should be organized to meet local circumstances, but the points listed below should be applicable in most cases. These are aimed at all patient areas, but are of critical importance in the special care units where the most seriously ill patients and the most complex equipment co-exist.

Arrange engineering assistance in the form of maintenance and repair of equipment and advice concerning equipment operation, electrical safety etc.

Monitor services performed by outside companies and agencies under warranties and other agreements.

Provide in-service training on the safe and effective use of medical equipment.

Initiate immediate and thorough investigations in cases where equipment malfunction or risk to patient or staff was indicated.

Maintain an efficient logging and reporting system allowing proper control and record keeping.

Carry out periodic inspections, calibration and preventive maintenance on all medical equipment at intervals depending upon perceived possible risk to patients.

Develop a procedure aimed at ensuring that medical equipment to be leased or purchased will serve the purpose for which it is intended, at the anticipated level of cost. That it is safe, reliable and effective and is the optimal selection of alternatives. Technical support considerations (such as the availability of technical manuals, spare parts and training) must also be addressed at this stage.

Draw up specifications with rigid requirements to which manufacturers or suppliers must adhere prior to closing of a sale or lease agreement.
